"Chairman Kaga" (mike-mckinnon)

I was explaining to my wife what the GTV in GTV6 stood for - Gran Turismo Veloce - with regard to the concept of an old school European grand touring car, ie how to get from Milan to Monaco as quickly, comfortably, and with as much behind the wheel entertainment as possible.
"So what does my Highlander's XLE denote?" she asked.
In response, I decided to answer many lingering questions about model designations and dig into the Interwebs with a big honkin' list of letters. I tried to stay from marquee specific nomenclature (BMW's get especially weird). below are industry standard designations, with a few that might have originated with a particular manufacturer but have either worked their way into public consciousness or have been adopted by others.
Did I leave any out? And feel free to debate the historical origins of these. This is simply based on general automotive knowledge, Google, Wikipedia, and some vintage enthusiast sites.

I'm amusing myself by thinking of both my Ford Escort LX and Honda Civic LX as "Luxury". Silly marketers!

Toyota, in their marketing omniscience, made a new one for the 2015 Camry: XSE. Assuming it follows the same trend as XLE, it stands for Extra Sport Edition.
You also missed all three from the Pontiac Bonneville (FWD edition): SLE, SSE, and SSEi. And while we're on GM, how about GXP and GTP? What about GTU?

The B in GTB is indeed for Berlinetta, but that denotes a coupe. A sedan would be a Berline or Berlina.

Berlinetta translates into "little sedan" - Berline=sedan (or saloon) + etta=little. I believe it's the cute Italian way of saying 2+2, denoting a back seat or just additional space behind the front seats for passengers or luggage.

Well, my car is an SXT but Dodge themselves have said that it means nothing, they just use it cause it sounds cool.

Yeah, I didn't include anything that was just a combination of cool sounds!
